เพชรสังเคราะห์ และเพชรเสมือน
อัญมณีสังเคราะห์ คือ อัญมณีที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นมาโดยมนุษย์ไม่ได้เกิดจากขั้นตอนขบวนการธรรมชาติโดยอัญมณีสังเคราะห์จะมีองค์ประกอบทางเคมี, โครงสร้างผลึก, คุณสมบัติทางการมองเห็นและทางกายภาพเหมือนกับอัญมณีธรรมชาติหรืออัญมณีแท้ เช่น เพชรสังเคราะห์ประกอบด้วยธาตุคาร์บอนและการจัดเรียงตัวของอะตอมก็เหมือนกับในเพชรธรรมชาติ
สิ่งเสมือน หรือเพชรเสมือน คือ วัสดุที่ถูกสร้างโดยมนุษย์หรือโดยธรรมชาติ ซึ่งสิ่งเสมือนถูกนำมาใช้แทนอัญมณีแท้และถูกเรียกอีกชื่อว่า “สิ่งเลียนแบบ” (Imitation) วัสดุที่ถูกนำมาใช้เพื่อเลียนแบบเพชรธรรมชาติมีหลากหลาย เช่น แก้ว, เพทาย (Zircon), สปีเนลสังเคราะห์สีใส-ไร้สี, YAG (yttrium aluminum garnet) และ GGG (gadolinium gallium garnet) เป็นต้นปัจจุบันสิ่งเลียนแบบเพชรธรรมชาติที่พบเห็นได้บ่อยในแวดวงเครื่องประดับคือCZ (synthetic cubic zirconia)หรือที่คนไทยนิยมเรียกว่า“เพชรรัสเซีย” และโมอีส (synthetic moissanite) หรือที่คนไทยเรียกว่าไทยเรียกว่า “เพชรโมอิส”
